Sam Houston State University got its name from the Texas hero, General Sam Houston; it was established in 1879. This public University is located between Houston and Dallas, Huntsville-Texas, with an enrollment of approximately 16,662 (Fall 2008). The University operates out of five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, and Humanities and Social Sciences. These colleges offer undergraduate degree programs, masters programs, and doctoral programs in the fields of Criminal Justice, Educational Leadership, Counselor Education, Clinical Psychology and Reading.
